Whether China has religions and what the characteristics of Chinese religions are remain debatable. This is because religious studies mainly focus on religious beliefs, but Chinese religions are maintained through ceremonies. Ceremonies, involving sacrificial offerings and objects, as well as concrete sacrificial behaviors, are important for the continuous development of Chinese religions. Oracle bone inscriptions from about three thousand years ago prove that ancestor worship and consciousness of ancestor worship are the major elements of Chinese religions and are strengthened through religious ceremonies of the Shang Dynasty. This talk will discuss the usage of sacrificial offerings in the ancestor worship ceremonies in the Shang Dynasty, demonstrating the significance of ancestor worship in the Shang Dynasty sacrificial system.
