Four-Character Form (FCF) is a particularly expressive form in Chinese with a typical structure of the combination of 2+2. This talk focuses on the analysis of metaphor and metonymy occurred in the antonymous morphemes and semantic changes caused within contrastively antonymous FCF. The pervasive occurrence of metaphor and metonymy in contrastively antonymous FCF is then possible to be explained from two linguistic perspectives, lexicalization and prosodic phonology. Based on deduction and linguistic facts, the contrastive semantic field is argued to be developed semantically by means of metaphor and metonymy.
