The phenomenal growth of the Chinese Church despite many years of persecution is a fascinating subject to historians. Such phenomenal growth was not accidental, but the fruit of hard labor and effective strategies of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The China Inland Mission (CIM), the largest mission organization in China at the time, is the subject of this study. Leslie T. Lyall (1905-1996), the CIM missionary, wrote extensively on the history of the CIM especially in the period from 1930 to 1980. From his written records, we can trace four subtle but very significant changes in the strategies of the CIM. All these changes were vital to both the growth and the survival of the Chinese church. Apart from recording these changes, Lyall was in fact an active player in these changes. The purpose of this talk is to access the effectiveness of the CIM ministry in the light of the present rapid growth of the Chinese church as well as the role that Lyall played in the history of the CIM.
