Abstract: The conflation of entertainers and prostitutes in pre-modern Chinese social practice is a widely recognized phenomenon. This paper will bring together evidence from two nineteenth century documents, Faying miji and Jubu qunying, to discuss the development of the “private apartment system” which developed following the arrival of Anhui opera troupes in Beijing, how this led to distinctive developments within the jingju art form, as well as the historical logic expressed in these developments. Particular attention will be given to the institutional production of jingju performances and its impact on the formation of a unique theatre culture, thereby clarifying the function and significance of the “private apartment system” in the rise ofjingju.
