The Late Tang period, according to Gao Bing’s “Tang Shi Pin Hui”, refers to the period from the early years of Emperor Wenzong’s Kaicheng era (836 – 840) to the beginning of the Five Dynasties. During this period, while the mainstream of poetry was Jintishi, there were a few poets who wrote a lot of Gushi had earned their reputation. Emperor Wenzong and other emperors like Xuanzong supported Confucianism. Wenzong’s stance on literature and his amendment on the format of Imperial Examination encouraged the production of Gushi in the Late Tang period.
