Russian-Soviet Literature in Modern and Contemporary China

My talk concentrates on the relation among Chinese and Russian-Soviet literatures, histories and politics. Based on the translation of the 19th-century Russian and 20th-century Soviet literature in modern and contemporary China, this paper knits a wide web of how Chinese intelligentsia imagined, absorbed, applied/appropriated and learned from Russian-Soviet art and literature via the process of both translation and reproduction throughout the 20th century. By tracing the development of such process, the similarities of political ideology these two countries have been shared in literary works can be seen. More importantly, my study shows why these similarities are significant to illuminate the socio-historical backgrounds of arts and cultures, illustrating the entanglements of individualism and collectivism in terms of economy and social classes.
本次演講聚焦於中俄比較文學、歷史與政治之間的關聯性。講者將以十九世紀俄羅斯與二十世紀蘇聯文學在現當代中國的翻譯作品為主軸，串連起五四前後中國文人是如何經翻譯而想像、挪用、包裝到全面學習俄蘇文藝的知識生產與加工過程。由此發展的過程可以清楚得見其果：兩國因強烈受到政治與意識型態影響而展現出驚人的相似性。更重要的是，這些相似性不僅體現於兩國知識份子的創作，映照了文藝與文化的歷史，亦成為個人與集體在經濟及社會各層中相互 糾結辯證的一面寫照。
Brief Biography of Hsiang-Yin Sasha Chen
Hsiang-Yin Sasha Chen is Associate Research Fellow in Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy at Academia Sinica in Taiwan, specializing in comparative literature and film studies. She earned her M.A. in St. Petersburg State University and finished Ph.D. at Trinity College in University of Cambridge. Prof. Chen is the visiting scholar at Harvard University between 2009 and 2010 and The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2016. Her recent publications include “Symbolizing and Dramatizing the ‘Self’: ‘Superfluous Man’ and ‘Superfluous Words’ in the Prose of Qu Qiubai” and “Eros Impossible and Eros of the Impossible in Lust/Caution: The Shanghai Lady/Baby in the Late 1930s and Early 1940s” in 2014. Prof. Chen is working on two books; the first one investigates the interaction and interchange of Russian-Soviet and Chinese literatures during the May Fourth period, with a specific reference to the works of Gogol and Lu Xun, Turgenev and Qu Qiubai, Ostrovsky, Gorky and Cao Yu. The other concentrates on the theme of constructing modernity of female body and polity in leftist China, with a particular highlight of the globalization and localization of Kollontai in the Soviet Union, China and Japan.
陳相因 現任台灣中央研究院副研究員，於聖彼得堡國立大學取得文學暨語言學碩士學位，並於英國劍橋大學三一學院獲博士學位，鑽研比較文學與電影研究。陳教授在2009至2010年間擔任哈佛大學比較文學系、東亞語言文明系及斯拉夫研究系三系聯合之訪問學者，2016年則受邀為香港中文大學中國語言及文學系訪問教授。其近期出版之著作有2014年〈「自我」的符碼與戲碼 論瞿秋白筆下「多餘的人」與「多餘的話」〉，以及〈色戒中「愛欲的不可能」與「不可能的愛欲」：三○年代末和四○年代初的上海小姐 / 寶貝〉。陳教授目前正在撰寫兩本專書著作；第一本著重俄蘇與中國五四文學之間的跨文化研究，另一本則為柯倫泰主義在蘇聯、中國與日本的全球化與在地化。
